Exploring the Enchanting World of Paraiba Gemstones: Rare Beauty, Unique Color and Priceless Elegence

Paraiba gemstones are a relatively new addition to the world of coloured gemstones, but they have quickly become some of the most sought-after and valuable gems on the market. Their vivid, electric blue-green colour and rarity make them a favourite among collectors and jewellery enthusiasts.

The story of Paraiba gemstones begins in the 1980s, when a new type of copper-bearing tourmaline was discovered in the Brazilian state of Paraiba. This new type of tourmaline was unlike anything seen before - its colour was a bright, neon blue-green that seemed to glow from within. It was quickly dubbed "Paraiba tourmaline" after the location of its discovery.

Paraiba tourmaline was an instant sensation in the gemstone world. It was the first time that such a vivid, electric blue-green colour had been seen in a gemstone, and gem collectors and jewellery designers were eager to get their hands on it. However, the supply of Paraiba tourmaline was extremely limited, with only a few hundred carats mined each year. This rarity made Paraiba tourmaline one of the most expensive gems in the world, with prices reaching into tens of thousands of dollars per carat.

In the years since its discovery, Paraiba tourmaline has continued to captivate gem enthusiasts. The gem has since been found in other parts of Brazil, as well as in Mozambique and Nigeria, though the Brazilian Paraiba variety remains the most prized. The gem has also been found in other colours, including pink and purple, but it is the electric blue-green Paraiba tourmaline that remains the most valuable.

Paraiba gemstones are some of the most beautiful and unique gems on the market today. Despite their relatively soft nature, Paraiba tourmalines remain a popular choice for high-end jewellery designers, who appreciate the gem's unique character and eye-catching colour. At Ryder, we have a close relationship with one of the worlds top Paraiba miners from Brazil and can offer our clients magnificent choices of stones.
